The need to optimise storage space is a common one in most households. An excellent way of doing so is with storage beds. Ottoman beds in particular have become popular thanks to their sleek, minimalist design; but what is an ottoman bed, how do they work, and how many styles are available?
We answer all your common questions about ottoman beds, below.
An ottoman bed is an adaptation on the classic ottoman: an upholstered seat, without a back or arms, that serves as a box of storage. An ottoman bed, therefore, is a bed that uses gas-lift hydraulics to lift up and provide storage in much the same way.
Ottoman beds typically lift from the foot of the bed (although they can sometimes lift from one side), where you can then access a large amount of storage space underneath.
As with any bed frame, there are both pros and cons to an ottoman bed. We’ve outlined some of these below:
Many would argue that the benefits of an ottoman bed outweigh the cons. Storage is perhaps their main selling point, as ottoman beds are a very practical option for bedrooms with limited storage space. Not only do they provide more storage space that other types of storage bed (relative to bed size), but by offering closed-off storage, they tend to look neater and more sleek than those with visible boxes or drawers.
An added benefit of ottoman storage bed is that they minimise the amount of dust collected in the bedroom due to their clutter-control capabilities. Furthermore, having your not-immediately-needed accessories tucked away under the bed makes the room feel significantly more streamlined and comfortable.
It can be more difficult to access the storage of ottoman beds than other styles due to the nature of lifting the whole bed. This makes the ottoman bed less ideal for storing items you’ll want to use regularly, but perfect for things like spare bedsheets, extra pillows, or airbeds for when you have guests over.
Ottoman beds can also be difficult to move due to their weight. They’re usually solid structures rather than beds that can be disassembled (i.e., the storage element can’t be separated from the rest of the bed), so they’re heaving than their other storage bed counterparts.
As mentioned above, though, many users feel these slight cons of ottoman beds are significantly outweighed by the pros.
One of the benefits of an ottoman bed is the number of styles it’s available in. At Get Laid Beds, we have a number of ottoman storage bed styles to choose from, each available in 17 different finishes.
Ottoman beds with headboards, like our Ottoman Storage Bed (pictured) at Get Laid Beds, encompass the three ‘C’s: classic, comfortable, and convenient. Ottoman beds with headboards are a timeless style of bed frame – and we think they look particularly good in our solid wood finished!
Ottoman beds don’t always need to have a headboard. In fact, going without adds a modern touch to the bedframe and opens it up to different orientation or bedroom style options.
Our Ottoman Storage Bed (No Headboard/Space Saver) (pictured) is ideal for bedrooms that are particularly limited when it comes to space, for example. The ottoman element allows for ample storage, but the lack of headboard makes this bed ideal for spaces with low or alcove ceilings, too.
On the opposite end of the scale to an ottoman bed without a headboard is the Ottoman Four Poster Storage Bed (pictured). These stunning wooden bed frames are the epitome of luxury, making a statement that’s justified by the space saved underneath.
With your storage easily accessible from the foot of the bed, the four poster ottoman bed is as convenient as any other style of ottoman bed, with the added extravagance of the four poster, curtained style.
There really is an ottoman storage bed for every style of bedroom. Whether your bedroom is a more traditional style, modern and minimalist, or more on the opulent end of the spectrum, ottoman storage beds provide plentiful storage to optimise the rest of your bedroom’s space.
All our ottoman beds can be made to measure but some of our most popular options include single ottoman bed frames, double ottoman bed frames and king size ottoman bed frames.
