What Affects The Quality Of Sleep?

By Harriet 27 January 2016

Getting a restful sleep is important for a number of reasons. There are various ways to help achieve a good quality of sleep, from upgrading to a quality wooden bed to limiting the late nights. There are also several factors that can have an impact on sleep, both internal and external.

We here at Get Laid Beds have found some of the top factors that can have an impact on the quality of your sleep. From spending too long scrolling on your mobile phone to late night snacking, here's a look at a few of the things which could be hampering your quality of sleep.

Avoid Staring At A Screen

If you are staring at a screen before going to bed, whether it’s a television, phone or tablet, they can all overstimulate your brain. This can make you feel uneasy and alert during a time in which you should be feeling sleep and prepared to go to sleep. Resulting in you finding it difficult to actually get to sleep which then leads to your quality of sleep being poor.

Watch What You Eat

Diet has been proven to have an impact on how restful your sleep is. As well as having a number of health benefits, being mindful of what you're eating can help you get a good night's sleep. Your digestion slows by up to 50 percent while you sleep, so it's important to regulate when you're eating. Sufficient nutrient consumption also has a direct impact on quality sleep. Ensure you're eating plenty of vegetables and fruit to get your vitamins in and you'll be able to drift away more easily.

Regular Exercise

Those who exercise on a regular basis have been found to get a better quality of sleep than those who get minimal amounts of exercise. Although it has actually been found that you should avoid doing any exercise before going to bed as this can actually result in the quality of sleep deteriorating.

Late Night Snacking

It has been proven that eating snacks before going to bed can have a huge impact on the quality of sleep that you get. It can cause your stomach to feel unsettled, meaning that it can take you a while to drift off to sleep.

Caffeine

It's no secret that consuming caffeine in the evening can make getting to sleep a nightmare. The main reason people drink coffee in the mornings is to wake them up. It stands to reason that caffeine will severely impact your quality of sleep by virtue of keeping you awake for longer.

In Summary

Several factors can have an affect on the quality of your sleep. The majority of it is influenced by your lifestyle and the activities you get up to before going to bed. Exercise and any activities that can strain the mind should be avoided before bedtime. The best things that you can do to improve the quality of your sleep is to read a book before going to sleep as opposed to being on your phone.
