Meet Steve Andrews, a vital member of the Get Laid Beds team who has been contributing his skills for just over four years. When Steve first joined the company, he was on the shop floor, wrapping products—a role that he soon realised wasn’t quite his forte. Recognising his potential, the team offered him a new position that allowed him to leverage his strengths as the company grew and expanded its offerings.
Today, Steve works in what he affectionately calls his "screw room," a nickname that highlights both his role and his sense of humour. Here, he manages the assembly of components necessary for the beds GLB produces, particularly focusing on our Ottoman bed mechanisms. As demand has surged, so has the intricacy of the products, and Steve plays an integral part in ensuring that customers receive everything they need to assemble their new beds.
A typical day for Steve starts with a tack sheet. This automated document outlines bed numbers and specifies the quantity of screws required for each. “I work through that, making sure everything is in order,” he explains, highlighting the precision involved in his role. Beyond screws, Steve also assembles hinge kits for the Ottoman beds and prepares headboards that customers can buy separately. The accuracy of his contributions are crucial; without them, customers or our white glove delivery team wouldn’t have everything they need to successfully assemble their new beds.
But it’s not all about staying in the screw room for Steve. He embraces a hands-on approach and is always willing to help out his colleagues on the shop floor. “If anybody needs help anywhere, I’m always ready to get my hands dirty,” he says with a chuckle, reflecting his collaborative spirit and commitment to teamwork.
We posed some rapid-fire questions to Steve about sleep, and here’s what we discovered. Steve Andrews does not consider himself either a morning or evening person, but his daily routine is a testament to his thoughtful approach to the start of each day. Although GLB’s workday begins at 8am, Steve arrives by 6:50am, savouring the quiet moments before the hustle begins. “I make a cup of coffee and take my time to get ready,” he shares. That leisurely hour allows him to mentally prepare for the tasks ahead, setting a positive tone for the day.
When reflecting on his younger years, Steve fondly recalls the most unusual place he ever slept. “When I was a teenager, me and my friends used to go down to Torquay a lot. Sometimes, we didn’t have anywhere to sleep, so we ended up sleeping in a multi-story car park, surrounded by the smell of diesel and petrol.” It’s a stark contrast to his current routine, which sees him winding down around 10:30 pm most nights. The fun continues as he reflects on his efficient habits as an adolescent. “We’d go to bed in our clothes, wake up in our clothes and go back out in the same clothes we slept in,” he jokes, showcasing his knack for finding humour in everyday life.
His views on naps are also clear: “They’re awesome.” Steve believes a quick recharge can be incredibly beneficial, often providing a burst of energy that enhances productivity. “It depends on what time I wake up,” he admits, suggesting that his energy levels can fluctuate but are often rejuvenated by a short rest.
As for how his sleeping patterns have changed? Steve notes a significant shift since he started working regular hours. “I used to wake up at half past four, needing an alarm clock. Now, I just wake up naturally. I set my alarm for six, but I always wake up at five to six,” he explains, highlighting the more restful nights he enjoys now.
As the quick-fire questions roll in, Steve is asked about a pressing topic: socks in bed. “Yes or no?” the questioner prompts. His playful hesitation gives way to contemplation, repeating the phrase with a chuckle, “Socks in bed” his cheeky answer, delivered with a smile was “...Nothing in bed!”. As the session wraps up, he smiles and says, “I think we’ll end it there.” It’s these moments of laughter and authenticity that make the work environment enjoyable and showcase the approachable nature of Steve Andrews.
Steve Andrews is more than just a worker; he’s a key player in Get Laid Beds success. His journey from the shop floor to the screw room showcases his adaptability and dedication, proving that even the simplest roles can have a significant impact on the customer experience. For Steve, it’s all about teamwork, precision, and the joy of contributing to a growing company.
