You know that feeling when you step into your fancy 5 star hotel room for the first time? The one where you gawk at the perfectly neat bed sheets and beautiful decor that ties the whole room together before raiding an overpriced minibar?
It’s a feeling most of us would love to be able to bottle up and experience every time we step into our own bedroom (minus the overpriced minibar). So we’ve decided to take a look at how you can transform your bedroom to capture that luxurious hotel room feel, without having to get on a plane.
The Bed
The bed is the centerpiece of any hotel room, so you don’t want to go cheap and cheerful. A badly made bed that rocks is definitely not going to rock you to sleep, ending your dreams of a 5 star bedroom before they even begin. Think quality bed frames - the bigger the better - to get that wow reaction every time you step into your bedroom. Of course, as the Bedmakers of Britain we would say that; but since we all spend over a third of our lives sleeping in a bed, you’re better off making sure it’s a good one.
If you have the space, consider a Four Poster Bed to really turn some heads. If you’re concerned about storage space, we’ve got some great tips on how to maximize storage space in your bedroom without skimping on style. Take a look here.
Of course, when it comes to hopping into a hotel bed, the main thing you expect is comfort. If the bed isn’t comfortable then you’re probably in for a rough night's sleep no matter how pretty the room looks. When it comes to your own home, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the amount of mattress options available; from pocket springs to memory foam, there’s a ton of options available.
So, you have a great bed frame and the perfect mattress, but your room still doesn’t give off that five star hotel vibe you’re looking for. Next, it’s worth considering your bedding. Luxury hotels don’t skimp on the quality of bedding, with soft sheets and pleasant textures topped off with coloured accents that match the rest of the room. Clean white linen bed sheets are the go-to choice, and silk pillow cases are on their way into the mainstream (and are a good option to help sell the 5 star experience).
When it comes to pillows and bedding, it’s easy to find yourself encumbered with options. What’s a tog? What is Goose Down? Well to keep things simple, we pulled together the Ultimate Bedding Jargon Buster so that you’re in the know when it comes to choosing the right bedding for you.
You should also think about how you style your bed sheets. Consider adding more pillows and cushions with colours that match other decor in your room, as well as comfy blankets, quilts and folded sheets to top off the five star hotel look. Putting a little chocolate on your pillow is perhaps going a step too far, but we won’t judge!

The Lighting
Lighting in your bedroom helps to create the perfect experience that you’re going for. During the day, you want to get as much natural light in as possible to help make the whole room look fresh and even feel bigger. During the night, you want to avoid bright white lights or lights with blue tones. Blue light not only sets a clinical feeling to your bedroom (not quite a 5 star feeling) but also can make it harder to get to sleep. Aim for indirect lighting that is moody and soft and avoid lighting that is too bright. Lamps with soft fabric shades or cove lighting that give off orange toned light help give a feeling of warmth and comfort.
Lighting is also a huge factor when it comes to deciding what kind of bed frame you should have so if you’re unsure, check out our article on How to Decide on the Best Material Finish for Your Bed.
Accessorize!
Accessories provide character, and if you’re looking to recreate the prestige of a high-end hotel room then you’ll need to consider what accessories would work in your bedroom. You’ll want to try and keep meaningless clutter on to a minimum by accessorizing with small touches.
Floating bedside tables or underbed storage boxes that match your bed are both practical and great looking options. You can’t go wrong with a small plant or flowers in a nice vase, and don’t underestimate the effect that an elegant looking alarm clock, lamp or jewelry box can have on your room’s aesthetic.
You should keep colour in mind too, and aim to match accent colours to avoid creating a patchwork of colour that’ll leave your room looking like a circus. Importantly, it is worth experimenting! This isn’t a hotel room you’ll be staying in for a few nights - it’s your home so it still needs to be practical for living.
Hang Art
Speaking of adding personality to your room, artwork is a fantastic option! So if there’s certain art pieces that you like - particularly if their colours match with accent colours in your bedroom - then be sure to hang it up!
As a rule of thumb, try to keep the centre of your pieces 60 inches from the floor, and leave three to four inches between each frame.
Rugs
If you want that added level of comfort, then get yourself a nice soft rug to sink your toes into when you hop out of bed in the morning. When it comes to designing the interior of your room, it’s easy to forget about accessorizing the floor.
Give your feet that royal treatment you’d expect from any 5 star hotel.
Housekeeping
If you’re anything like us, the idea of doing your own housekeeping every morning makes you groan. But making the bed, folding away nightwear, and tidying up charging cables will mean your room feels clean and tidy every time you walk in. You’ll never achieve that hotel room feeling if your bed looks like a mass of bed sheets with discarded pillows lying on the floor.
It’ll all be worth it for that feeling of stepping into a 5 star hotel room as you retire to bed each night.
Mirrors
If there’s anything that we wish we could take from high-end hotel rooms, it’s often the opulent size of the rooms themselves. It’s no secret that mirrors are one of interior designers' favorite tools to help a room look much bigger and brighter.
If you want the feeling of a big hotel room at home, try hanging up a mirror or two strategically around the room to reflect as much diffused light as possible during the day. The size and placement of your mirrors totally depends on personal preference and your room layout, so feel free to experiment.
Make It Your Own
That’s it! Time to raid that overpriced minibar and make toast in your new bedroom of luxury. With these suggestions, you’re sure to be giving friends and family bedroom-envy in no time.
