How Often Should You Change Your Mattress?

By Jack 12 October 2022

Mattresses often go forgotten because they’re such a fundamental part of every household, but their upkeep is just as important as the rest of the home. However, you should stay on top of your mattress so that it stays better quality for longer, and so that you know when it’s the right time to change it before doing any damage to your muscles or respiration.

How Often Should You Change Your Mattress?

Generally, you should change your mattress every 6-8 years, because at this point the age of the mattress will be affecting its quality. However, you may need to change your mattress sooner if it’s no longer providing you with enough support and comfort for a good night’s sleep.

It could be obvious that your mattress needs replacing, such as you’re waking up with muscle stiffness, or the mattress is noticeably sagging or making more noise. However, it’s good to work on the assumption that you’ll replace your mattress every 6-8 years in the possibility that you don’t notice your mattress getting worse.

Perhaps you get a better night’s sleep when you stay in a hotel, or you’re finding your asthma or allergies are gradually worsening? These are all things to look out for after a few years of owning a mattress so that you can tell when it’s time to replace it.

How Can I Make a Mattress Last Longer?

While you should be replacing your mattress every 6-8 years, there are things you can do to make your mattress last a little longer.

Choose Quality

As with anything, the higher the quality, the higher the price. However, with a mattress, this quality also covers your quality of sleep – and when you spend a third of your life sleeping, you’ll likely want to make it the best experience possible.

All-foam and innerspring mattresses tend to last the least amount of time, whereas hybrid mattresses are usually a bit more durable. Latex mattresses are the most long-lasting and can last even longer than the typically recommended eight years.

Maintain Your Mattress

Rotating your mattress every three months and using a mattress protector is the easiest way to get some extra life out of your mattress. This will prevent it from wearing down where you sleep in the same position every night, giving a more even dispersion of use over time.

You should also air out your mattress, if your home allows you to do so – strip the sheets off it and leave it exposed to an open window and a fan, if possible.

Clean Your Mattress

The quality of your mattress will last longer, if you treat individual spills and stains as and when they happen - they can usually be removed with cold water, baking soda, and a gentle laundry detergent or dish soap. You should also, however, make a regular habit of vacuuming your mattress using the upholstery attachment.

Use a Quality Bed Frame

Giving your mattress the right support is fundamental for making it last. Many mattresses come with a box spring; however, we’ll always recommend the handcrafted quality of our own wooden bed frames. Each one is made with a foundation of wooden slats that are twice as thick as the industry standard to provide the most support possible.
