UK Bed and Mattresses Size Guide

By Sarah 5 November 2015

The UK range of bed sizes is quite large, and if you’re coming from abroad or buying a bed for the first time, it can be difficult figuring out which of the available UK bed sizes would be the best for you.

If that’s the case, we’ve got you covered. Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the most common UK bed sizes. Or, if you’re looking to directly compare to other bed frames, we also have a blog post: Comparison of bed sizes, UK vs EU

Below is a breakdown of the bed sizes within each sub-group of bed frame.

Small Bed Sizes

Excluding beds for children and custom-made beds, the smallest bed size available is the small single, coming in at 2ft 6” wide. Things only get bigger from there.

Next up is the classic standard single, perfect for children and teenagers, which is 3ft wide. It’s also ideal if you’re short on space; a single is the best choice when you haven’t got much room to work with.

After that, there’s the 3ft 6” petite double and the 4ft wide small double bed. These are excellent choices, if you need a bed for two, but haven’t got much floor space and don’t mind sleeping in close proximity to each other.

What Size Is a Small Single Bed and Mattress?

Built for solo sleepers that are low on space, a small single mattress measures 2ft 6in (76.2cm) wide, and 6ft 3” (190cm) long.

Small singles are ever so slightly smaller than normal singles and are generally the better choice for smaller rooms. Despite their smaller size, small singles can still perfectly accommodate one person for a comfy night’s sleep, every time.

What Size Is a Single Bed and Mattress?

If space isn’t much of a concern, with only one person needing use, a standard single bed is usually preferred. These beds and mattresses come in at 3ft (91cm) wide, and the same length as a standard single at 6ft 3” (190cm).

What Size Is a Petite Double Bed and Mattress

The first of three size variations on double beds is the petite double bed. The petite double is the narrowest of all three variations, with a width measuring 3ft 6” (106cm).

What Size Is a Small Double Bed and Mattress?

The second largest double bed variation is the small double bed. Small doubles are marginally larger than petite doubles, with an additional 6” (15cm) in width to give a little bit more room between two users.

Medium-Large Bed Sizes

The next set of bed sizes are the beginning of high-end comfort and luxury. Standing slightly larger than the small double is the 4ft 6” standard double bed size. Of all bed sizes, this one combines the qualities of comfort and space-saving most effectively.

That being said, with the 5ft king-size bed, you’ll have no problem with in-bed space.

We then have the small super-king at 5ft 6”, and the next size up (and the largest standard of bed sizes in the UK), the super king size bed. This bed size stands at 6ft and is the best of the bed sizes if you like plenty of space to yourself, or simply that added element of luxury.

What Size is a Double Bed and Mattress?

Standard double beds measure 4ft 6” (137cm) in width, making them the largest of the three double bed sizes available. Double beds still retain the same 6ft 3in length measurement, though.

What Size is a King-Size Bed and Mattress?

As the first bed size to introduce a slight adjustment in length, bumping it by an additional 3” (7cm), the king-size bed is where space starts to become less and less of a concern. Measuring 5ft (152cm) in width, king size beds offer nearly two small single beds worth of space.

What Size is a Small Super King Bed and Mattress?

Clocking in the same 6ft 6” length, the small super-king  bed and mattress grants an additional 6” (15cm) in width, making it a step between the more traditional king size frame, and the lavish super king.

What Size is a Super King Bed and Mattress?

The super king size bed and mattress adds another 6” in width to the small super king. At this stage, the super king offers the same effective sleeping space as two standard single beds.

Extra-Large Bed Sizes

While that’s the end of standard bed sizes, it’s not the end for us. Here at Get Laid Beds, we offer five sizes even bigger than the Super King: the 6ft 6” Eastern King, the 7ft Emperor, the 7ft 6” Super Emperor, the 8ft Caesar and the 9ft super Caesar.

These beds are huge, making them a fantastic focus in larger bedrooms, and as expected, are equally luxurious (particularly in our four-poster canopy style).

What Size is an Eastern King Bed and Mattress?

As a perfect square, the Eastern King bed measures 6ft 6” (198cm) wide, by 6ft 6” in length.

What Size is an Emperor Bed and Mattress?

The second of two perfectly square bed frames, the Emperor bed and mattress measures 7ft (213cm) in width, and in length.

What Size is a Super Emperor Bed and Mattress

Featuring an additional 6” (15cm) in width, the super Emperor bed completes the emperor range of bed sizes as the largest available.

What Size is a Caesar Bed and Mattress?

Out of the two types of Caesar bed frames available, the standard Caesar is the smallest, measuring 8ft (243cm) in width, and 7ft in length. Despite it being the smallest of its kind, the Caesar is by no means small. At this size, you get the same sleeping space as two small double bed frames.

What Size is a Super Caesar Bed and Mattress?

The Super Caesar bed frame is the largest standard UK size available, measuring 9ft (274cm) in width and 7ft in length. With such a large size, these beds are reserved only for the largest of sleeping spaces, in the largest rooms across the country.
